Girls in Year 3 had a rare opportunity to study a Norman Church in the parish of Whatlington on Wednesday. They have been studying churches in their RE lessons so the visit provided a great opportunity to see some of the core features of a church in situ – they learnt a little of the history of the church, including how the church has rebuilt itself after extensive fire damage in 2010 and the fact that there has been a church on that site since 1066. They sketched some of the beautiful stained glass windows and they completed a search to identify things they have learned about, including baptismal fonts, altars, and lecterns. They counted up the number of Christian symbols they could find and some of them even had a go at ringing the bells (a job that was a lot harder than they had anticipated). Our thanks go to the St Mary Magdalene church for enabling the girls to get such a ‘hands on’ learning experience.
