The Senior Hockey Squad represented Moira House on Thursday in the U18 Sussex Schools Tournament at Eastbourne College. The girls played against the top schools in the area and made it extremely difficult for each team’s attack.

In defence, Vice-Captain Lizzie Garner made solid tackle after tackle to prevent even the most experienced and skilled attackers from the other schools. Lauren Davison was a constant voice at the back and picked up a trade of through balls, and both Lauren and Lizzie showed composure and vision. Anja Guldemond and Bethany Collins cut down the opponents’ options, marking closely. Poppy Horne and Imogen’s commitment to training with the team paid off as they played their best games of the season and added the much needed strength at the back and midfield with some well-timed tackles and goal-line saves. Chloe Cory was a real strength in defence and midfield, and made some timely and crucial tackles. In the matches against Brighton College and Mayfield the defence was almost impenetrable and gave them a frustrating game. Imogen also played in midfield and should be commended for her tireless motivation as the tournament progressed.

Heading up our attack, Annie Smith and Jade Buck combined the much needed defensive support with clever movement and penetrating runs of the ball. Frankie Head provided a pivotal role picking up a number of fine textbook passes from Lizzie Garner and skilfully turning her defender to feed Annie and Jade. In the matches against Brighton College, Hurst and Mayfield, we were unlucky not to score more goals.

The day finished with our closest match against Mayfield where they held them to a draw until late in the second half, getting two further goals at the end of the match! Sorrel Jordan was a constant source of inspiration and her continuous positive support and enthusiasm spurred the team along. She made some fine saves throughout the day and saved her best match until Mayfield, displaying lightening reaction time and some creative and original saves! In the dying seconds of the match the girls won a well-earned short corner and Frankie gave a perfectly weighted ball to Jade to shoot accurately past the Mayfield goalkeeper. A super end to a super day.

The team must be commended for their outstanding effort, high spirits and constant improvement – well done!
