Special Needs

The Special Needs Department supports girls who may at some time in their school life experience difficulties with learning or accessing the curriculum.

This could include supporting girls with specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia, receptive language difficulties or those needing targeted intervention to boost literacy and numeracy. The Department aims to develop independent and confident girls who take ownership of their own learning. This is achieved by:

  • Assessments to determine individual strengths and weaknesses
  • Assessments to provide Access Arrangements for public examinations such as extra time or use of a laptop
  • Developing strategies to compensate for specific weaknesses (eg. poor short term memory; poor spelling skills)
  • Helping pupils to discover their preferred learning styles
  • Encouraging pupils to develop their talents and strengths

The Special Needs Department uses a multi-sensory approach to encourage active participation and engagement in the learning process.

The girls follow a structured support programme which is tailored to individual needs. Each girl is also encouraged to set personal targets for the term. Reading fluency and comprehension skills are developed through the SRA Reading Laboratory and vocabulary-controlled story books. The computer literacy programme ‘Units of Sound’ provides structured, cumulative intervention to develop literacy and encourage independent learning. Curriculum support is given in close liaison with subject teachers.
