Sixth Form School for Girls (Boston)
Life in the Sixth Form is very different from life in the first five years at secondary school. Sixth Formers come to see their teachers as helpers and guides rather than authority figures and learn to take more responsibility for themselves.
Whilst in some ways a Sixth Former can live a more relaxed life, she has to work much harder and far longer hours academically, and has to plan her life accordingly.
There is a wide range of subjects on offer at A level. Our excellent examination results are especially impressive given our mixed ability intake. Classes are small offering the opportunity for tutorial based lessons and much individual attention. Staff are available to guide and support students in surgeries or one to one appointments. Students’ academic performance is closely, but not intrusively, monitored. Support mechanisms are in place to deal with any difficulties.
There are many people to whom a student can turn for advice and support, people who know her well. We do not provide all the answers but we try to encourage students to reflect on their decisions and choices and take responsibility for actions or inactions.
The most important source of advice and support is the tutor, who acts as a mentor and guide, helping the student to stay on top of her workload and to meet deadlines. The tutor monitors progress in relation to targets set and encourages the student to strive to achieve her best.
Our aim is to bridge the gap between the school girl and the undergraduate. In the Sixth Form we encourage independent study habits by ensuring that students make effective use of their study time. Every student, day or boarding, has her own desk and place to store her things.
Our comprehensive enrichment programme leaves little time for a student to be bored. Girls are encouraged to achieve a proper balance between work, activities and free time. Girls may take the ECDL computer proficiency course, qualify as an ASA swimming teacher or take driving lessons.
There are many opportunities for leadership as Knights, Standard Bearers, Squires and Pages, Heads and Deputy Head of Pyramids, Sixth Form prefects, music or sports captains.
We appreciate that our Sixth Formers are growing up and should enjoy privileges not enjoyed by younger students. For example, they do not wear school uniform but instead follow a dress code.
We believe that students work best in a happy, secure environment where our expectation is clear, where good work is recognised and where achievement is praised. We place great emphasis on relationships, encouraging students to relate well with each other and with staff. We believe that determination, commitment and hard work are the key to success.
Our young ladies leave us with confidence and independence, prepared for the next step in their lives.
