On Thursday 6 June, our intrepid Year 9s made their way up to Shakespeare’s Globe to see The Merchant of Venice with Jonathon Pryce as Shylock. The weather was perfect for such a day, as they munched their way through venison burgers at Borough Market before wandering along the Southbank. With some time to spare before the performance, we nipped across the river to peek into St Paul’s Cathedral and back to the Tate Modern to look with wonder at the Rothko.

The play was lively and engaging with the excellent presentation we have come to expect from Globe productions. Pryce, as Shylock, was powerful and sympathetic although our favourite character must have been Gratiano who kept us laughing throughout. After the play, the girls walked to Victoria train station whilst eating frozen yoghurt! The journey back was enjoyable by foot as the girls walked through St James’ Park to see cygnets, ducklings and goslings.

The Shakespeare in Schools Festival will continue on Thursday 11 June 2015 at Ratton School. Six of our Year 9 students will rehearse their scenes from The Merchant of Venice and will perform their extracts in the theatre at Ratton at 6 pm – parents are invited to join us for this presentation.
