In and beyond the classroom

In the classroom, students have specialist Music and Drama teaching across the whole School. Through weekly lessons students learn the language, theory and concepts via a range of practical and academic tasks. Once students reach Key Stage 4 and beyond, they have access to GCSE and A Level courses that will prepare them for further, advanced study of their chosen subject.

Beyond the classroom, the possibilities are endless. For those who wish to pursue the learning of an instrument, or improve their speech, dance, theatre and drama skills, we offer individual weekly lessons across a wide range of instruments, individual LAMDA lessons and private dance lessons. Students can work towards graded exams in LAMDA (speech and drama), ABRSM and Trinity College London (instrumental, singing and musical theatre) and ISTD (ballet and modern).

Students are offered an extensive programme of activities that run over lunchtimes. In Music and Drama alone there are currently 24 weekly activities on offer, that range from all kinds of performing opportunities, to music studio production techniques, to school productions. This year our senior production is a modern language reworking of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, written and directed by our Head of Drama, Ken Lawrence. Called Dream, Dream, Dream, it will feature a live rock ‘n’ roll band and a glee club. The performance is scheduled to take place at the Devonshire Park Theatre in late February or early March. We also plan regular trips to see concerts and productions, both locally and further afield, and throughout the year, for all students.
