Music
Music is vibrant here at Moira House. We have a very strong team, excellent facilities and some wonderfully talented girls. Whilst we celebrate and develop musical excellence at every stage of the school we also encourage all girls to participate in music both within the curriculum and in our extensive extra-curricular programme.
Our Director of Music, Mr Peter Burge, is supported by Mrs Barbara Ashby, the Assistant Director of Music in the Senior School and Mr Martin Neill, Head of Junior School Music. We have fourteen specialist instrumental and singing teachers providing first-class tuition in a wide range of instruments, including percussion and electric guitar. There are currently more than 180 individual lessons taught each week. Girls are prepared for Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music examinations.
We run more than twenty extra-curricular activities, including aural and theory classes, numerous chamber music ensembles, Jazz Band, Wind Ensemble, Senior Orchestra and seven choirs. A course in studio recording techniques, utilizing the new fully digital recording studio, is lead by our professional recording engineer.
We have an excellent reputation for the quality of our music making. The Senior Chamber Choir sings Evensong at Chichester and Canterbury Cathedrals, regularly performs at engagements in Eastbourne and the surrounding area and joins with the Eastbourne Choral Society in performances of works such as Mozart’s Requiem (2010) and Haydn’s Creation (2009).
Our full schedule of concerts and performing opportunities for the girls throughout the year includes the Autumn Concert, Carol Service at All Saints’ Church, House Music Competition, Summer Concert and Founders Day at the Congress Theatre. The Spring term Choral and Instrumental concert combines the Moira House Singers (an adult staff and parent choir) with choirs from Moira House and pupils from schools in the local area to perform large-scale works such as Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man (2010) and Vivaldi’s Gloria (2009).
We regularly collaborate with the Drama Department in the performance of musicals. Recent productions performed at The Devonshire Park Theatre have been the Little Shop of Horrors (2008), Grease (2009) and our Gala Concert (2010) with items performed by the whole school combining Music and Drama, and 4 one act plays from our Sixth Form.
We have a great tradition of Performing Arts tours. These are fantastic opportunities for the girls to perform in some exotic locations around the world. 2007 took us to Vancouver, Victoria, San Francisco and Los Angeles and in 2009 we performed in Dubai and Hong Kong. Future projects include a music tour to Barcelona in March 2011 and a Performing Arts tour to Moscow and St. Petersburg in October 2012.
Our Senior Choir performed at The Barbican as finalists of the National Barnardos Festival Choir Competition (February 2011).
