It has been a fantastic week in the music department! Wednesday saw the annual House Music Competition. We were joined by a guest adjudicator, Mr Joe Sharp. Joe Sharp is a performer and educator who works extensively in London and the South East. He enjoys a busy and diverse professional career, performing regularly with the London Symphony Orchestra and London Philharmonic, playing on West End shows such as Matilda, Joseph and Spamalot, and appearing on the soundtrack of various films, including The Hobbit. In addition, he holds a first class honours degree from the Royal College of Music and a PGCE in secondary music from the University of Sussex. He sings, plays trumpet and double bass, and is a member of four bands performing on the London, national and international music scenes. He also works part-time as a secondary classroom teacher at Shoreham Academy, and has an extensive private teaching practice.

Mr Sharp was extremely impressed with our students who gave a first class account of themselves, making it extremely tough to judge the winners of each class on more than one occasion!

I am pleased to announce the overall winning house was Merlin, who only just edged past Excaliber at the last class of the day! We were treated to our first ever ensemble class this year, which was something I hope will grow and develop in the coming years.

The winners of each class will be performing in a Recital next Monday (2 March) in Swann Hall at 7 pm (please note that there will be no Bugsy Rehearsal on Monday for Years 7 – 9). I would urge you to join us at this event which promises to be an evening of exceptional music making and talent.

It is always wonderful to see Junior and Senior girls side by side at the House Music Competition and this year was no exception. Congratulations to all who took part and in particular our winning students including Hannah Nelson, Megan Lee and Tianlu Wang who won in two categories each!
